چکیده

Nonlinear weather optimal control of ships exposed to environmental disturbances is discussed. Emphasis is placed on weather vaning, that is the ship should be orientated such that the moment in yaw due to mean current, wind and wave forces is zero and at the same time maintain a "xed position and heading. The main problem in doing this is that the environmental forces acting on the ship are impossible to measure with su$cient accuracy. A new concept for weather optimal position control (WOPC) based on nonlinear control theory is invented and presented for the "rst time in this paper. Experiments with a model ship are used to document the performance of the controller. The proposed controller and the concept of WOPC were patented by the authors in cooperation with ABB Industri AS, Oslo in December 1998 under patent no. NO308.334. 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. A Linear Design Model for Wave Filtering and Dynamic Positioning ⋆

This paper describes a procedure to obtain an improved linear design model for Wave Filtering (WF) and Dynamic Positioning (DP) of ships and offshore rigs subjected to the influence of sea waves. The proposed model captures the main physics of the problem and allows for the design of advanced control and estimation algorithms to solve the WF and DP problems. Numerical simulations, carried out u...

A separation principle for dynamic positioning of ships: theoretical and experimental results

This paper presents a globally asymptotically stabilizing (GAS) controller for regulation and dynamic positioning of ships, using only position measurements. It is assumed that these are corrupted with white noise hence a passive observer which reconstructs the rest of the states is applied. The observer produces noise-free estimates of the position, the slowly varying environmental disturbance...

High Performance Ship Autopilot With Wave FilterThor

This paper describes the application of Lyapunov stability theory to automatic steering of ships. The motivation for using nonlinear control theory is that nonlinearities can be compensated for in a systematic manner. For instance, this allows the designer to design the autopilot system for a ship described by the nonlinear models of Norrbin (1963) and Bech and Wagner Smith (1969) both utilizin...

Optimal integrated passive/active design of the suspension system using iteration on the Lyapunov equations

In this paper, an iterative technique is proposed to solve linear integrated active/passive design problems. The optimality of active and passive parts leads to the nonlinear algebraic Riccati equation due to the active parameters and some associated additional Lyapunov equations due to the passive parameters. Rather than the solution of the nonlinear algebraic Riccati equation, it is proposed ...

Robust Dynamic Positioning of Offshore Vessels Using Mixed- Synthesis, Part I: A Control System Design Methodology

This paper describes a procedure to design robust controllers for Dynamic Positioning (DP) of ships and offshore rigs subjected to the influence of sea waves, currents, and wind loads using H∞ and mixed-μ techniques. To this effect, practical assumptions are exploited in order to obtain a linear design model with parametric uncertainties describing the dynamics of the vessel. Appropriate freque...
